Are You Having Joy, or Are You Just Feeling Happy?
The significant differences between having joy and feeling happy
Are you having joy, or are you just feeling happy? In this blog, I’ll share the differences and benefits between joy and happiness that you need to know.
As humans, we often confuse the concepts of being happy and experiencing joy. Many of us believe that the two are interchangeable, but in reality, there are significant differences between the two.
Happiness is often synonymous with daily pleasures and material possessions. It tends to be fleeting, usually arising from an external source, whereas joy is a deeper and more profound emotion that originates from within and is not dependent on external circumstances.
When we focus solely on achieving happiness, we fail to recognize that joy is a more stable emotion that transcends life’s ups and downs. Joy is a feeling of inner contentment and peace, it is not dependent on external factors such as wealth or achievements. In contrast, happiness is a more superficial and temporary feeling — that feeling you get when you buy a new outfit or have a glass of wine with friends.
There are many benefits to experiencing joy in our lives. It is an emotion that brings about a sense of fulfillment and purpose, and it is associated with increased resilience and coping abilities. When we experience joy, we are more likely to have a positive outlook on life, and we are better equipped to deal with the inevitable challenges that come our way.
On the other hand, when we focus solely on achieving happiness, we often end up feeling dissatisfied and unfulfilled. We become trapped in a cycle of chasing external sources of happiness, such as material possessions and relationships, which can never fully satisfy us.
Moreover, those who seek happiness often become attached to impermanent and changing experiences, leading to feelings of frustration and disappointment when the happiness leaves. Joy is an emotion that is not dependent on external sources, and thus it is not subject to change.
The importance of joy has been emphasized in spirituality as well. The Bible mentions the word “joy” countless times, indicating its significance in a spiritual sense. For example, in Psalm 16:11, it says, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” This verse emphasizes that true joy is found in a relationship with “God” (Yahweh) and not in worldly possessions or achievements.
Similarly, in Philippians 4:4, it says, “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” This verse reminds us that we can experience joy irrespective of our circumstances, as we have the hope and assurance of Yahweh’s love and grace. It further emphasizes that joy should be a priority in our lives, and we should cultivate it by focusing on our faith.
In contrast, the word “happy” is not mentioned as much in the Bible. The reasons for this are many, but one reason may be that happiness is often a fleeting feeling, while joy is a deeper and more profound emotion that is not dependent on external factors. Human beings are wired to seek happiness and pleasure, but these experiences are temporary, and we often find ourselves seeking more.
On the other hand, joy is a more stable emotion that is not subject to change. By prioritizing joy, we can find contentment and meaning in our lives, even in the face of adversity. When we cultivate joy, it spills over into other areas of our life, including our relationships, work, and personal growth.
Ultimately, we should aim to cultivate joy in our lives by practicing gratitude, mindfulness, and finding ways to live in alignment with our values. When we prioritize joy over happiness, we create a sense of inner peace much deeper than the thrill of any material possession can offer.
Overall, both happiness and joy are positive emotions that we should strive to cultivate in our lives. While happiness is fleeting and dependent on external sources, joy is a more stable and profound emotion that originates from within.
The Bible clearly reminds us that joy should be a priority in our lives and that it is not dependent on external sources. By focusing on our faith and cultivating joy, we can find true fulfillment and purpose in our lives.
Yes, I’d say focusing on having joy over feeling of happiness can lead to a more fulfilling, meaningful, and purpose-driven life. Life is too short to be chasing temporary happiness, so let us prioritize joy over happiness and continue to seek it in every aspect of our lives. So be joyful, not just happy!
