Why are nurses the most trusted healthcare professionals? Yes, they earned it! Nurses are now considered the most trusted professionals in healthcare.

Yes, according to recent surveys, nurses consistently rank as the most trusted professionals in the entire healthcare industry. This inspires me to write and publish my new book titled “Building Bridges: A Nurse’s Tale of Friendship.” It makes a nice gift and read for nurses. You can order it here.

In Gallup’s 2023 Health and Healthcare survey, 82% of Americans rated the medical care provided by nurses as “excellent” or “good” — the highest rating among all healthcare providers. Doctors ranked second at 69%. You can read about it here.

Nurses also received the highest rating for honesty and ethical standards among all professions in Gallup’s 2023 Honesty and Ethics poll, with 78% of Americans rating nurses as having “very high” or “high” ethical standards. This marks the 17th year in a row that nurses have topped the list. You can read about it here.

Furthermore, a 2021 survey by NORC at the University of Chicago found that 85% of the general public said they trust nurses, higher than any other healthcare entity including doctors (84%), hospitals (72%), and the healthcare system overall (64%). You can read about it here.

These surveys highlight the consistently high levels of public trust and confidence in nurses compared to other healthcare professionals and organizations. The ethical standards, quality of care, and patient interactions of nurses are viewed very positively by the American public.

So, what makes nurses so special? For starters, they are the ones who spend the most time with patients, often serving as their primary caregivers. They are responsible for administering medications, performing procedures, and monitoring patients’ vital signs. But it’s not just about technical skills — nurses are also trained to provide emotional support and comfort to patients and their families.

“Nurses are the ones who hold a patient’s hand when they’re scared or worried,” says Dr. Rachel Rodriguez, a registered nurse and professor at the University of California, San Francisco. “They are the ones who provide reassurance and calmness when things seem uncertain. They are the ones who make a difference in patients’ lives.”

Nurses also play a crucial role in preventing medical errors and ensuring that patients receive safe and effective care. They are often the first to detect potential complications and alert other healthcare professionals to take action. In fact, studies have shown that hospitals with higher ratios of nurses to patients have lower rates of patient harm and mortality.

Despite their many accomplishments, nurses often face challenges that can affect their ability to deliver high-quality care. Staffing shortages, long hours, and emotional burnout are just a few of the issues that can impact their work. However, nurses continue to rise to the challenge, driven by their passion for patient care and their commitment to making a difference in their communities.

And what can we do to support our hard-working nurses? For starters, we can recognize and reward their contributions to healthcare. We can also advocate for policies that promote safe staffing ratios, improve working conditions, and provide resources for continuing education and professional development.

Overall, nurses are the backbone of the healthcare industry, earning the trust and respect of patients and professionals alike. Their dedication, expertise, and compassion make them an essential part of any healthcare team. As we celebrate National Nurses Week (May 6–12) and honor their contributions to healthcare, let’s remember the importance of supporting and valuing our nation’s nursing workforce.
